CNN v. Al Jazeera on the day’s news
While reading online about the Alberto Gonzales resignation I mistakenly wound up at CNN.com. Their only mention of the Gonzales firing on the main page was: “Bush: Gonzales’ name dragged in mud” and a link to a Time.com article, “Gonzales finally caves. Why?”
Also included on the CNN main page: “Killer Greek wildfires may be terror crime,” “Hussein-linked ‘terrorist’ caught,” “Do you have a ‘frenemy’?” and “Skin Care Gets Manly: It’s not just for women.”
A visit to top fold of the front page of Al Jazeera English would reveal that the Turkish military has issued a warning on the eve of a presidential election against anti-secularism, that Afghan opium crops are at a record high, French President Sarkozy is calling for a troop withdrawal from Iraq, and a comparatively objective piece on the Gonzales resignation — among other stories of what would traditionally be called news.
And I’m not even going to attempt visiting to FoxNews.com.
If media like CNN is the primary lens through which Americans view the world, they are fucked. And by extension, we are likely fucked, as well.
