Currently Reading
With the weather so nice, I hung around outside instead of blogging this weekend. Terrible, I know.
So, here’s an update on some books I’m reading right now.
- Emergence: The Connected Lives of Ants, Brains, Cities, and Software - Stephen Johnson
- The New City: How the crisis in Canada’s urban centres is reshaping the nation - John Lornic
- The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism - Naomi Klein
- Absolution Gap - Alastair Reynolds: Fiction! Science fiction, even! I certainly wouldn’t read this one if you aren’t already a huge Reynolds fan. Revelation Space is a much better book to start with, and starts this series off.
- DMZ: Public Works - Graphic novel about corporatism and war by Wood and Burchielli; w/ intro by Cory Doctorow
Folks, do I ever love not being in University right now.

Naomi Klein, really? John Lornic sure, but Naomi Klein? I guess I just can’t get myself to appreciate her.
Really! Parts of NOLOGO really turned me off, but otherwise, she’s a good journalist and is writing about topics other folks aren’t. Shock Doctrine is a good book and the research is sound — even if you disagree with the conclusions it’s a worthwhile read for her work in pulling together a lot of disparate and under-reported (un-reported) data.
Anything in particular you find distasteful?
