Doctorow declares his Virgin Media contract void in reaction to CEO’s admission
Reacting to Virgin Media’s CEO calling Net Neutrality a “load of bollocks” Cory Doctorow has declared his contract with them void, canceling his service, and encouraging others to follow his lead.
The CEO admitted he’s already providing some content to people faster than others. If you’re unwilling to pay his company a premium for delivery, he says he’ll relegate you to the “internet bus lane.”
We all KNOW that most ISPs are already violating Net Neutrality, but in the past, they’ve always been bold-faced and ostentatious liars. Traffic shaping is consistently denied by ISPs but I can speak from experience that my traffic consistently appears to be throttled. By now, I’m used to Shaw’s insistence
that they’d never do such an atrocious and corporatist thing.
In the UK, the Virgin CEO suggests it won’t simply be an attack on file-sharers and noncommercial activity anymore. He threatened the BBC and other public broadcasters with expulsion to the “bus lane” unless they begin to pay a premium.
Doctorow writes:
Theoretically, I’m locked into a Virgin plan for another six months, but as far as I’m concerned, they’ve just announced that they’re violating the agreement by announcing that the services I can reach will be systematically slowed down unless they pay Virgin extra. That means that we’re now null and void. I’ll be calling to cancel today.
